Heal, Then Bloom

Posted by in Big Ideas | 8 comments

I was chatting with a friend on twitter, when I asked her about a direction in her life. She told me she was choosing “wholeness” over growth in the coming months. She wanted to take some time to re-connect to herself, after she spent much of this year in growth mode.

I made the comment that “bigger isn’t the right word. Wholeness is definitely better, and that you can’t really get bigger without being whole first.”

Oooh. That was kind of deep.

Immediately, my mind flashed to a garden bulb. Sometimes, when you’re trying to transplant them, they’ll get sliced. When they get sliced up, they don’t grow back properly. Sometimes they won’t grow back at all. Eventually, the leaves fall off, it withers, and dies. No amount of fertilizer will help them get growing.

They have to be whole, in tact, to be able to send down roots, and send up shoots so that we can enjoy their colorful blooms later in the season.

So too, must we take time to make sure we’re whole, in tact, and ready to throw down roots before we can bloom and grow.

As I write this, I recognize now that this past year has been a season of healing for me. You can read plenty of posts that attest to the struggling, patching, and amalgamating I’ve been doing this year. I’ve still got a few scrapes to repair, but on the whole, I AM whole.

I’ve started throwing down roots, building my support network with my mastermind group, and Sarah Robinson’s Creating Irresistible Presence event. I’ve established a nourishing environment for me to start sending up shoots.

So now it’s time for some freakin’ Miracle-Gro!

There are cycles and seasons for every person, every business. Bulbs have to be cut back in the fall so they can store up energy over winter. So too, must we cut back from time to time, to store up energy over our personal winter.

As my friend embraces her personal season of healing and storing up, I look to what this last quarter of the year holds for me as I keep trying out this new super hero suit. I’m working out my secret identity, figuring out my own Kryptonite, etc. It’s fun watching new things grow.

It’s also important to recognize there’s a LOT of work that goes on behind the scenes before we get to see the blossoming.

    Hey Lisa!

Needless to say, I can REALLY relate to this post! :-)

I love the idea of giving ourselves (or acknowledging we need) a personal season of healing and storing up!!!!

And you’re RIGHT! You do inspire struggling leaders to achieve the impossible… STEP BY STEP!!!

Glad to hear it resonated with you.

You inspired the gardening analogy, I must confess. My thumbs aren’t as green as I would like them to be. I saw your post about working in the garden on Monday, and the idea hit me.

      It’s still a lesson I’m learning myself.

This post spoke right to me, as you can imagine. I’ve been pushing so very hard to grow, to transform, to bloom. But dadgummit, it’s not time yet. This is the lesson I brought home from CIP, the one I keep coming back to. Just as you, wrote – you can plant and even force a bulb to grow when it’s been sliced, but it won’t grow well. For that, you need a whole bulb – and a proper growing season. This is a time for turning inward, for collecting of energies, for contemplation. And it’s a good time.

      Amy,
Thanks for your reflections on this. You’re so right on. You CAN force an issue (I’ve done it), but it doesn’t always turnout to be a healthy thing. That’s a great insight!
